About Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt therapy is an experiential, holistic practice that endeavors to see that the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts. This whole is explored though awareness of self both within and beyond one’s body boundary. To deconstruct self into ‘mind’, ‘body’, ‘spirit’, ‘relationship’ is a pragmatic decision in service of focusing awareness so that choices may be recognized and experienced.
Gestalt therapy is based primarily on phenomenology, the Existential practice of tracking one’s moment to moment experience of self/world. The recognition is that we are inexorably a part of our environment and vice versa so that ‘self’ is more of a location than identity. Health is then seen as the ability to be aware of the whole of one’s longings and possibilities.
